Vehicle-to-grid pilot project opens in Mirafiori

FCA, ENGIE Eps and Terna are working together to develop the world’s largest sustainable transportation hub
FCA, ENGIE Eps (Paris: EPS) and Terna today demonstrated the vehicle-to-grid (V2G) pilot project for electric vehicles at the evocative location of Turin (Heritage Hub) where Mirafori FCA is located in Turin. The project was once fully completed. Will become the largest of its kind in the world.
At the international press conference, the opening ceremony of the V2G installation in the Drosso logistics service area was held in the presence of the Minister of Economic Development Stefano Patuanelli, representatives of the parliamentary committee related to the theme of the day, and the highest officials from the country. The Piedmont region and the city of Turin-and more guests from domestic and foreign institutions and publications-FCA, ENGIE Eps and Terna introduced the V2G project here, describing its functions and how it works.
Mirafiori’s V2G factory is a “100% Made in Italy” project. On the one hand, this is an important opportunity for the Italian industrial system to play a leading role in the future development of sustainable transportation. On the other hand, this is the result of the joint efforts of three leading companies in the industry. In the process of using this innovative technology, their experiments now begin with a two-way charging solution, which benefits from physical aggregation in a single-point interconnection with the grid and can interact with other energy sources on site.
V2G technology enables vehicles to exchange energy with the grid, making it a valuable resource for the national grid operated by Terna, helping to establish a more sustainable electrical system, and providing opportunities for optimizing vehicle operating costs for the benefit of drivers , And concrete possibilities to contribute to a more sustainable power system.
The two-way technology can both charge the car and power the grid. Only when the car and the charging infrastructure use a common language, the two-way technology can work efficiently. This is the focus of the trial that started with the completion of the plant.
Therefore, V2G represents a major opportunity, which is why FCA, together with its partners ENGIE Eps (the technician responsible for building the plant) and Terna (the operator of the high-voltage and ultra-high voltage national grid), are working on energy reduction edge projects. , Is an example of true innovation.
Despite being locked down due to the COVID-19 outbreak, the factory has converted usually only costs (storage of vehicles waiting to be transported to the sales network) into revenue in just four months of construction. It can be used by fleet managers in the near future. In fact, a long parked vehicle (maybe many) represents an opportunity to provide services to the network in an “aggregated” manner.
The first phase of the plant’s construction includes the installation of 32 V2G chromatographic columns, which can be connected to 64 cars, aimed at conducting technical tests and managing logistics in the storage area. By the end of 2021, the Drosso V2G project will expand to interconnect up to 700 electric vehicles, making it the largest such facility in the history of the world. The second stage of management will be determined mainly by cost-effectiveness: the goal is to provide services to the Terna grid and ensure that FCA and ENGIE Eps achieve positive economic results.
In order to cover parking spaces for cars connected to V2G, ENGIE Italia is a partner of the partners. The construction of the roof consists of approximately 12,000 solar panels. The roof will provide “green” energy for production and logistics facilities. The plant will be able to produce more than 6,500 megawatt-hours of energy each year, thereby offsetting the annual carbon dioxide emissions of more than 2,100 tons, which is a boon for the environment. Therefore, the project has made a significant contribution to the decarbonization of the industrial sector.
The press conference was divided into two parts. The first part was a talk show. The three stakeholder companies gave a detailed introduction to the reasons for their decision to join the project.
Roberto Di Stefano, Head of Electric Vehicles in FCA Europe, Middle East and Africa, explained: “Vehicle-to-grid technology provides huge opportunities for optimizing the operating costs of vehicles and bringing benefits to drivers. It also contributes to the development of vehicles. A specific contribution has been made. The sustainability of the power grid. However, we need a V2G-friendly regulatory environment. The Ministry of Economic Development has formulated standards and means to promote the promotion of vehicle-to-grid technology in Italy to promote the popularization of electric vehicles With the increase of flexible resources, the power system needs to fully incorporate renewable energy into mainstream data sources. It is now expected to follow a complete regulatory framework, referring to fair remuneration for network stability services, and the installation of two-way connection equipment for the provision of auxiliary services Additional costs related to the measurement system.
For Massimiliano Garri (Director of Innovation and Digital Solutions, Terna): “The V2G electric mobility project proposed today with FCA and ENGIE Eps is the result of active research and development sharing the road, which strengthens Terna’s core role as an engine to promote energy Transition. Electric vehicles represent a very important potential energy source and an excellent opportunity to help achieve a more sustainable and decarbonized power system. The intelligent two-way interaction between the car and the grid also provides Terna with more flexibility and resources. Innovative services, coupled with our unique skills, ensure increasingly reliable and efficient service operations.”
Finally, Carlalberto Guglielminotti (CEO of ENGIE Eps) said: “By 2030, according to forecasts, even if only 5% of vehicles driven in Europe are electric vehicles, electric vehicles will become the dominant technology that will completely change the grid and will Becoming is decisive for every balance in the European energy market.” ENGIE Eps is already a pioneer and leader in the field of microgrid and energy storage. He felt that he must respond to challenges by providing innovative technical solutions as usual. Responding to this huge change in the energy sector. This is why ENGIE Eps made a major investment in research and development jointly with FCA in 2017 to develop the vehicle-to-grid technology starting today. In fact, V2G is a solution that will bring about the biggest paradigm shift in electric transportation systems and global electrical systems. At ENGIE Eps, we are very proud to be able to realize its construction and ultimately accelerate and improve the sustainability of the already unstoppable energy transition.
The second part of the event was the technical insights and conclusions of Pietro Gorlier, Chief Operating Officer of FCA EMEA and Stefano Patuanelli, Minister of Economic Development.
Pietro Gorlier said: “Sustainable liquidity is the key pillar of FCA. FCA is the foundation of all our activities. Only in Italy-including the start-up of products related to electric and electric mobility-FCA will invest 5 billion euros, affecting us In each of the factories, 2 billion euros will be used for the Mirafiori building. In this regard, in addition to V2G, several other projects are also underway, including solar panels for solar power generation equipment: 150,000 square meters of surface area, capable of generating 15 megawatts of electricity, so it helps to reduce emissions of more than 200 megawatts. 5,000 tons of carbon dioxide. Or battery hubs, which will use the most advanced technology to assemble batteries.
It is now crucial to formulate regulatory requirements, and agencies are now studying these aspects. National plans for public and private charging infrastructure must also be launched to support the growth in the number of electric vehicles. ”
Through the recorded video message, EU Energy Commissioner Kadri Simson (Kadri Simson) also hopes to attend the event. She emphasized: “The EU’s energy system will benefit greatly from the participation of electric vehicles as a power supplier in all electricity markets, directly or through the participation of aggregators. This will enable us to use more renewable electricity for deep decarbonization. “.
In his closing speech, Minister Stefano Patuanelli stated that the Ministry of Economic Development conducts constant discussions and dialogues with all parties involved in the country’s future construction and guarantees its department’s greatest commitment to establishing a regulatory framework. And related incentives needed to support the development of electric mobility technology. V2G is the central solution to improve this mobility accessibility. The implementation of this project puts Italy in a leading position in Europe
The day ended with the inauguration ceremony of Minister Patuanelli and FCA Chairman John Elkann. They connected the new Fiat 500e to the two-way tower of the V2G factory in the Drosso logistics center in Mirasori, Turin.
